Escaping the Fog on a winter day

The other day I woke to another foggy day.

So I grabbed my snowshoes and Toby and drove to Lake Tahoe.

It took 27 minutes of driving to get out of the fog,

just before Auburn did we finally find the sun.

We drove up through the forests, past huge granite mountains,

rivers full of melted snow and lakes of frozen ice.

Once there,  just outside of Tahoe City,  we went snowshoing in a show park.

The air was crisp, the sky blue, the sun bright and warm, the snow hard.

The trail rambled through the forest next to the Little Truckie River.

After 45 minutes of fun we got in the car and drove toward South Lake Tahoe,

past Sunnyside – which sadly was closed for lunch,  past Homewood,

past vast views of Lake Tahoe and majestic mountains,

past DL Bliss State Park where I have camped and hiked many times,

past Emerald Bay, which never looked lovelier…

so I stopped to take photos and admire the incredible view.

Back in the car, we drove past the  point in the road  just past Emerald Bay,

which overlooks the bay and Lake Tahoe on the left side of the road,

and a frozen lake on the right side of the road.

I think that point in the road must be the most beautiful view from

a road anywhere in the world.  It is both lovely and terrifying…

with clifts on either side of the road.

It brought back memories of me biking this road and the lake 24 years ago.

Then we arrived at Tallack Park across from Fallen Leaf Lake and parked.

We walked down a trail to a lovely stretch of beach on Lake Tahoe.

The view of the lake was breathtaking.  Not a ripple on the calm lake.

The sun at my back and the sweet smell of pine needles in my nose.

Finally, we found the perfect spot and destination.

Then, after 30 minutes, we hiked back to the car, drove past South Lake Tahoe,

up the granite pass on 50 and back to the Sacramento Valley and home.

We arrived home about 4pm tired but happy from our little adventure.

Not only did we escape the fog and find the sun, we found our bliss.
